Sangyoon Jeon's cross-country cycling trip turned tragic Monday afternoon when the 27-year-old from South Korea was hit and killed by a van in South Carolina. Jeon set out Oct. 15 from New York City with the goal of making it to Los Angeles by Jan. 5; on Monday, he was riding from Darlington to Columbia when he was hit from behind by a delivery van in Eastover, the State reports. People who had hosted Jeon on his journey shared warm recollections from him on the bicycle touring website Warmshowers, with one remembering, "He even read my kids a bedtime story." The crash is still under investigation. No charges have been filed as of this writing. (More cycling stories.)
