The lawyer for a Soviet-born businessman and associate of Rudy Giuliani who was arrested last month on campaign finance charges says his client will comply with a subpoena to talk to Congress about an alleged meeting one of its own had in in late 2018 in an attempt to dig up dirt on Joe Biden. Attorney Joseph A. Bondy, who represents Lev Parnas, told CNN and NBC News that his client was told directly by former Ukrainian prosecutor Viktor Shokin that Shokin and Devin Nunes, the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, met in Vienna in December—a development that, per CNN, "could put Nunes in a difficult spot." That's because Shokin is the prosecutor Republicans accuse Joe Biden of helping to oust in an inappropriate move to keep Ukrainian gas company Burisma and his son Hunter from being investigated for corruption; there's no evidence either Biden acted inappropriately.

"Nunes had told Shokin of the urgent need to launch investigations into Burisma, Joe and Hunter Biden, and any purported Ukrainian interference in the 2016 election," Bondy tells CNN. Another Parnas lawyer told the Daily Beast earlier in the week that Parnas helped arrange meetings and calls for Nunes in Europe. Meanwhile, the AP reports documents released by the State Department Friday show Giuliani was in contact with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on at least two occasions, just weeks before the US ambassador to Ukraine was relieved from her post in May. The records obtained by watchdog American Oversight show Giuliani talked to Pompeo on two dates in late March—"a clear paper trail from ... Giuliani to the Oval Office to Secretary Pompeo to facilitate Giuliani's smear campaign against [Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch]," says the group's director. (Sources say Parnas thought he was on a "secret mission" to help Trump.)
