A UK woman on trial for conspiracy to commit murder arranged for two lovers to battle for her affection in a "medieval duel" to the death, according to prosecutors. Asta Juskauskiene, 35, had left her husband, Giedruis Juskauskas, when she met a Lithuanian prisoner online. Mantas Kvedaras was an acquaintance of another prisoner Juskauskiene had married in February, believing they'd be together upon his release in March, though the man was barred from entering the UK. Kvedaras, 25, didn't have the same trouble. Released in May, he met Juskauskiene in Stockholm before joining her in London two weeks later. That's when the duel went down. With 42-year-old Juskauskas still pining for her affection, Juskauskiene allegedly arranged for a fight in a Stratford alleyway, per the Telegraph. That's where Juskauskas bled to death from 35 stab wounds on June 17.

While Kvedaras has admitted to murder, prosecutors argue his girlfriend knew he planned to inflict "serious violence" on the father of her 5-year-old daughter during what was "in effect a latter-day medieval duel." Juskauskiene's friend Jurgita Sulciene is to testify for the prosecution. She told police she'd warned of danger if Juskauskas and Mantas were to meet. Juskauskiene's alleged response was that "they would fight." "This was not a fistfight that escalated: It was a murderous assault with a single-bladed knife with death as the inevitable outcome," prosecutor Hugh Davies said Tuesday in Kingston Crown Court. Prosecutors say Juskauskiene harbored Kvederas after the murder, deleted possibly incriminating text messages, and repeatedly lied to police. The Washington Post reports defense attorneys have yet to present their case in the ongoing trial. (More murder stories.)
