School trips can be a great experience for students—but not when they find cameras hidden in their hotel room. That's what Wisconsin high school students reported during their recent stay at at the Minneapolis Hyatt Regency for a school-sponsored conference, NBC News reports. Details are scant, but a staff member at Madison East High School has been put on leave "as a precautionary measure" as police investigate. The hotel is cooperating with authorities and says it only found cameras in that one room. "As confirmed by local authorities at this time, it does not appear that anyone associated with the hotel is involved in the situation," said Hyatt in a statement.
Meanwhile, Minneapolis police say they're looking at the electronic devices involved "to see what their capabilities are." No one's been arrested, but CBS Minnesota reports that a home in Cottage Grove, Wisconsin, was searched Thursday in the ongoing investigation. "It's scary stuff," says cyber-security expert Mark Lanterman, who notes that people can easily buy a small surveillance camera online for $36. "It would be very easy to sneak another device onto a hotel’s Wi-Fi network, stream that video over the internet to the computer where the voyeur is sitting."
