(Newser) – The new Miss America is the fourth Miss Virginia to wear the crown—and the first candidate to perform a science demonstration in front of judges. "Miss America is someone who needs to educate," 24-year-old biochemist Camille Schrier told the judges after a colorful demonstration of the catalytic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. Before the win, Schrier praised the competition for "taking the focus off our bodies" and said that if she became Miss America, she would promote drug safety and STEM—science, technology, engineering, and math—education. People reports.

Schrier, a Virginia Tech graduate who is studying to get her doctor of pharmacy degree, said she decided to enter the competition after the swimsuit portion was ditched last year, the AP reports. "I kind of figured that I would never get on that stage because I was a woman who did not want to get into a swimsuit on stage. And I didn’t have a performing talent, which is really ironic now," she said. For only the second time in the pageant's 98-year history, it was held outside Atlantic City, at the Mohegan Sun casino complex in Connecticut. (Last year's winner also praised the end of the swimsuit competition.)
