When it comes to Valentine's Day, members of Generation X appear to literally buy into it more than other generations. A survey by Compare Cards pegs the average outlay among all Americans at $142, with men ($249) far outpacing women ($57). But the generational breakdown shows big differences, notes CNBC:

  • Gen Z (ages 8 to 23): $82
  • Millennials (24 to 39): $113
  • Gen X (40 to 55): $293
  • Baby boomers (56 to 74): $55
The Wall Street Journal, meanwhile, has a word of caution for those who go out to dinner every year: The meal is going to be more expensive in 2020. Restaurant prices rose 3.1% in January compared to last year, the fastest annual increase in a decade. (More Valentine's Day stories.)
