He wanted his fans to remember this night for years to come—but a boxer's choice of attire to make that night memorable ended up doing him in, he now says. Deontay Wilder faced off against Tyson Fury on Saturday in Las Vegas for the WBC heavyweight championship, and Fury won the fight, pulling off a seventh-round TKO. Wilder says it was his elaborate 40-pound costume—a get-up he says he wore as a tribute to Black History Month, complete with helmet, sequins, various ornamentation, and batteries to make his mask light up—that brought him down. "My uniform was way too heavy for me," he tells Yahoo Sports. "I didn't have no legs from the beginning of the fight."
Wilder said many people told him afterward that "it looked like something was wrong" with him in the ring, and that he tried to push through the heaviness of the moment. He notes he tried the costume on the night before the fight, but he apparently didn't anticipate it being such a detriment in the ring. "I wanted it to be good and I guess I put that before anything," he now rues. Wilder tells the AP he'll use a clause in his contract to call for a third fight with Fury. "This summer, with no fights in between," Wilder says. "I'm a warrior and I'm ready to go again." Wonder what he'll wear. (More strange stuff stories.)
