(Newser) – Donald Trump Jr.'s assertion that Democrats want the coronavirus to reach the US and kill "millions of people" for their party's political benefit didn't go over well with Rep. John Garamendi. The president's son said on Fox Friday morning that Democrats will do anything to inflict political damage on his father, the Hill reports. "But for them to try to take a pandemic and seemingly hope that it comes here and kills millions of people so that they could end Donald Trump’s streak of winning is a new level of sickness," he said. Later in the day, when interviewed on MSNBC, Garamendi said "there would be a serious altercation" if Trump said that in his presence. "It would not be a healthy situation," the California Democrat added. A spokesman for Trump Jr. called the congressman's statement "outrageous."

It's the news media, Mick Mulvaney said Friday, that's ignored the outbreak, leading to a narrative that the Trump administration was slow to respond to the threat. In fact, he said, he and other officials briefed Congress about the outbreak last month. "Why didn’t you hear about it?" the president's acting chief of staff asked at the CPAC conference. Impeachment, he told the crowd, per the Hill. "The press was covering their hoax of the day because they thought it would bring down the president." The news media is interested in the story now in hopes that the COVID-19 outbreak will "take down the president," he said. Mulvaney conceded that the danger is real but no cause for panic. "We know how to handle this," he said. (Read more coronavirus stories.)
