It's a good thing US bobsled driver Kris Horn has a history as a brakeman. As USA Today reports, his knowledge came into play Sunday when his three teammates failed to make it into the sled during a World Cup run in St. Moritz, Switzerland, sending Horn hurtling alone down the track at speeds of 75mph. Video of the start shows pusher Ryan Rager stumbling as he tried to load into the sled behind Horn, leaving Hunter Powell and Caleb Furnell unable to jump in. All three fell to the ice—"Powell appeared to get thrown somewhat violently toward the track wall," per the AP—and briefly slid behind the departing sled instead of into it.
Horn—left trying to control a lighter, less stable sled with no brakeman—managed to climb from his driving position to the back, where the brakes are located. He brought the sled under control on a run that lasted just over a minute, according to the AP. Team officials said Rager, Powell, and Furnell all escaped serious injury. USA Bobsled head coach Chris Fogt, told the AP, "We are fortunate it wasn't worse."
The incident followed a Saturday crash during Horn's two-man race alongside brakeman Carsten Visserin. Banged up, Visserin was unable to compete in Sunday's four-man race, prompting Rager to step in, per the AP. There is now just one World Cup weekend remaining before USA Bobsled and Skeleton finalizes its roster for the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. Horn is a leading candidate to drive one of the men's sleds.
