In a bid to build popular support, President Obama revealed more details of his economic stimulus plan today, as debate between Democrats and Republicans in Congress over the package raged on, the New York Times reports. Obama painted the measure as an investment in the country’s future, not just a jobs plan, that includes 3,000 miles of new power lines and guarantees of health insurance to 8.5 million people in danger of losing coverage.

Obama’s plan, which mirrors one that Democrats may soon pass in the House, has come under fire from the GOP for its shear size, which they are unconvinced will work or even reach the economy quickly enough. Senate Republicans have been quicker to support Obama than their more conservative House colleagues; and while House Dems have taken most of their cues from the president, the Senate majority has proposed a differing plan, perhaps seeking to retain their influence.
