Within six months of meeting Steve McNair, Sahel Kazemi had fallen hard—and soon after came to the harder realization that the former NFL star wasn't actually planning to leave his wife and family for her, the New York Post reports in an extensive look at the chain of events that ended in the gruesome murder-suicide. "We told her [McNair] had a wife and children. It was always a red flag, but she never took our advice," says Kazemi's niece.

On a visit with Kazemi's family, McNair announced his intention of marrying Kazemi, the Post says, and friends thought he was sincere. But McNair was soon a no-show for a Vegas getaway, left the scene as Kazemi was charged with DUI, and she suspected he was seeing other women. On July 3, the 20-year-old Iranian orphan said, "My life is a ball of shit, and I should just end it." The next day, she did.
