Just when Ruth Marcus was feeling good about the women in the 2010 race, Carly Fiorina had to make that catty comment about Barbara Boxer’s hair. Fiorina tried to laugh it off—“It sort of goes with the territory,” she told Greta Van Susteren. “No no no no no!” writes Marcus in the Washington Post. Attacking your opponent’s appearance never “goes with the territory,” no matter your gender.
Women having more attention paid to their appearance may go with the territory. But “the point of having women in politics was not to produce a ‘Mean Girls’ sequel in the form of the California Senate race.” Fiorina’s comments soured what should have been a great day for women, and we can’t let it pass. Writes Marcus: “When middle-schoolers get caught trash-talking, a grown-up makes sure they apologize.” (Read more Carly Fiorina stories.)
