Piranha 3D is as good a killer piranha movie as you'll ever see, and looks set to be the horror film of the summer, say critics.

  • "This movie is a complete blast," writes Christy Lemire at the AP. It's "cleverly knowing without collapsing into parody," she writes, and "makes great use of its extremely random cast," which includes Elisabeth Shue as a bad-ass sheriff and Christopher Lloyd as a crazed fish expert called in when prehistoric piranhas start shredding spring-break teens at an Arizona lake.

  • The gore factor is even higher than in the Final Destination films in this highly entertaining "drive-in throwback, complete with corny jokes, unnecessary gore, stunt casting, and plenty of skin," writes Peter Paras at E! Online.
  • The movie is "a pitch-perfect, guilty-pleasure serving of late-summer schlock that handily nails the tongue-in-cheek spirit of the Roger Corman original," writes Michael Rechtshtaffen at the Hollywood Reporter, praising some highly inventive special effects work.
  • Family-friendly it isn't but this feast of "flying 3D chewed-off body parts, full-frontal everything, nasty death scenarios, and puke" is the most fun Dave White at Movies.com has had at the cinema all year. Piranha 3D, he says, is "the Citizen Kane of killer piranha movies."
