What is Newser?

Newser is an online news service that adds human intelligence to machine-driven aggregation. We search for the best stories all over the web, read them, and deliver succinct, sharply written summaries in a grid format that features photos, video and audio, and links to the original source.

How is Newser different from other news sites?

Newser does the reading for you. Our editors select the day's most covered and most talked-about stories from the 100 top news sources, along with compelling pieces from less-known sites that might otherwise be overlooked. Our editors distill articles and opinion pieces into lively and efficient summaries, telling you what you need to know, what you want to know, and where to go for the best coverage.

Why the web needs Newser

With news sources proliferating all over the web, few people have the time to search broadly for the best information and opinion. Machine aggregation searches widely but uses no judgment, so stories selected are not necessarily the most important or interesting, and the sources are often not the best for the story. Sites linked to a particular news brand offer editorial authority and judgment, but are limited by their brand loyalty.

Newser aims to create the first major native web news brand by combining the wisdom of editors and the power of technology, offering, we believe, a richer and more entertaining news experience.

Does Newser produce its own content?

Yes, with a 21st-century twist. Newser’s writers and editors don’t cover the news directly; they cover the web's coverage. Our aim is to cut through the clutter of multiple sources and sites to discover the most compelling information and ideas and deliver them to you in an efficient, lively format—as well as telling you where to go for more. We often use several sources for one story, pulling together several angles—the kind of comparison shopping few people have time to do.

And we offer a graphic interface that’s unlike any other news site.

Out job doesn’t end with summaries. We search for the best video and images for each story and select links to interesting related pieces. You can use the site for a quick, very visual snapshot of the news, or as a resource that leads you from one piece to threads that connect any given story to others of interest.

What is Newser’s point of view?

Newser seeks to offer information free of bias by searching widely for the most informed sources, aggregating and comparing them. We reflect the totality of credible news on the Internet and, because virtually all news appears first on the Internet, the totality of all English language news sources.

Who is behind Newser?

Newser was inspired by Vanity Fair media columnist Michael Wolff. It arose from his concern that no one had yet created a news service that was native to the online medium, yet respectful of the value that human editors can bring to news.

HighBeam Research created Newser as an extension of its existing online information businesses. In addition to Newser, HighBeam offers a portfolio of sites:

HighBeam Library: This subscription service enables users to search for and read more than 50 million articles from about 5,000 newspapers, magazines, journals, radio and TV transcripts, and reference works. The site is located at www.highbeam.com.

HighBeam Encyclopedia: Located at www.encyclopedia.com, this ad-supported, free-to-the-user service contains approximately 100,000 reference articles from such publishers as Columbia University, Britannica, and Oxford University Press. It also contains more than 3 million free newspaper and magazine articles that enhance and augment the reference experience.

Newser uses the HighBeam technology platform to access and filter millions of news and reference articles, photos and videos.
