LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Latest on a trial that will determine whether media mogul Sumner Redstone is mentally competent (all times local):

9:50 a.m.

An attorney for Sumner Redstone says the ailing media mogul expelled his longtime companion from his life because she repeatedly lied to him.

Attorney Robert Klieger said Friday in opening statements of a mental competency trial that Redstone knew exactly what he was doing when he kicked Manuela Herzer out of his mansion in October.

Klieger says Herzer manipulated the 92-year-old Redstone, emotionally abused him and tried to keep anyone from getting close to him.

Herzer dated Redstone in the late 1990s and remained a confidant until late last year. She says she is trying to protect the mogul by having him declared incompetent.

She contends Redstone is being manipulated by his nurses at the behest of his daughter, Shari Redstone.

Redstone controls Viacom Inc. and CBS Corp.

An attorney for the ex-girlfriend of ailing media mogul Sumner Redstone says she is trying to have him declared mentally incompetent to protect him from a circle of deceit around him.

Attorney Pierce O'Donnell said Friday during his opening trial statement in Los Angeles that Manuela Herzer had a friendship with Redstone that transcended intimacy.

O'Donnell attacked Redstone's daughter, Shari Redstone, of manipulating her father to remove Herzer from his life.

Herzer contends Redstone was manipulated into kicking her out of his home and life in October. O'Donnell says Herzer is trying to honor a promise she made to Redstone to care for and protect him.

A trial to determine the mental competency of media mogul Sumner Redstone is scheduled to begin Friday in Los Angeles.

Testimony is expected to begin with a closed session viewing of videotaped testimony solicited from Redstone at his home on Thursday.

Redstone, who suffers from a severe speech impediment, controls Viacom Inc. and CBS Corp.

A judge has said seeing and hearing from the 92-year-old Redstone is crucial to the case and his ruling on whether the mogul is capable of making decisions for himself.

The trial will focus on whether Redstone knowingly kicked out Manuela Herzer, a former girlfriend and longtime companion, from his mansion in October.

Herzer had been Redstone's designated person to make medical decisions for him, but was replaced. Redstone's lawyers say she repeatedly lied to him.
