LEWISTON, Maine (AP) — Police say they expect to file a criminal charge against the person who abandoned a dog outside a Maine animal shelter. The dog ran after the person's car and was later hit and killed by another vehicle.

The Sun-Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1SOv5n8 ) police say they've identified the individual who left the dog in the parking lot of the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society in Lewiston on Monday.

The shelter has video showing the dog running after the car as it drove away.

The Humane Society said on its Facebook page that the dog was found Thursday morning. It says the dog was fatally struck on a ramp to a bridge near the shelter.

Police say they plan to forward the case to the district attorney's office for review.
