Markets Right Now: US stocks close solidly higher

NEW YORK (AP) — The latest on developments in global financial markets (all times local):

4:00 p.m.

Stocks are closing higher on Wall Street, led by gains in technology and health care companies.

Apple rose again Thursday as investors became more optimistic about early sales of its newest iPhone models. The stock is up 12 percent this week.

Among health care stocks, Merck gained 2 percent.

Goodyear rose 5 percent after raising its dividend.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 177 points, or 1 percent, to 18,212.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index added 21 points, or 1 percent, to 2,147. The Nasdaq composite climbed 75 points, or 1.5 percent, to 5,249.

Bond prices were little changed. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note held steady at 1.70 percent.

Technology and energy stocks are leading midday gains on Wall Street.

Apple rose again Thursday as investors became more optimistic about early sales of its newest iPhone models. The stock is up more than 11 percent this week.

Energy companies also posted solid gains as the price of crude oil turned higher. Marathon Petroleum jumped almost 5 percent.

Goodyear rose 5 percent after raising its dividend.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 142 points, or 0.8 percent, to 18,178.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index added 17 points, or 0.8 percent, to 2,143. The Nasdaq composite climbed 58 points, or 1.1 percent, to 5,232.

Bond prices were little changed. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note held steady at 1.70 percent.

U.S. stocks are off to a mixed start on Wall Street. Retailers are mostly lower following weak retail sales figures while energy companies are getting a break from an upturn in oil prices.

Outdoor apparel maker V.C. Corp., which owns Timberland and North Face, dropped 3 percent Thursday, the biggest fall in the Standard & Poor's 500 index. Ulta Salon fell 2 percent.

Oil prices turned higher after declining three of the past four days. Anadarko Petroleum rose 1.6 percent.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 5 points at 18,031.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 1 point, or 0.1 percent, to 2,124. The Nasdaq composite climbed 8 points, or 0.2 percent, to 5,182.

Bond prices fell. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 1.72 percent.
