Authorities say one student is dead and another hospitalized after a shooting and stabbing near a San Francisco Bay Area high school.

Marin County sheriff's Lt. Doug Pittman said Thursday that both victims were students at Novato High School in Marin County.

Their names and ages have not been released. Both students were shot and one was stabbed Wednesday evening.

Pittman would not say if arrests had been made in the case. A motive is not known. The school is closed Thursday.

Police say the incident occurred on a hiking trail at the edge of a country club community. Pittman says there is no threat to the community because the attack was an isolated incident involving a small group of people.
