Officials say President Barack Obama is about to meet with House and Senate Democratic leaders to firm up their strategy before negotiating with Republicans over extending tax cuts and jobless benefits.

Democratic officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the timing of the session Monday afternoon was still uncertain. Vice President Joe Biden was also scheduled to be in the meeting.

All sides say a deal could be completed this week. But Democrats and the White House also want the final agreement to include certain tax breaks for middle- and low-income Americans that Republicans might resist.

The White House talks were designed to identify what provisions would have to be in the deal to win Democratic support.
