Colombian prosecutors have ordered the arrest of the country's ambassador in neighboring Peru for alleged criminal association with far-right militias.

The chief prosecutor's office said in a communique Wednesday that Jorge Visbal is wanted for criminal conspiracy for activities from 1998-2004 when he was president of Colombia's National Ranchers Federation.

Visbal could not be reached for comment. An Embassy spokeswoman in Lima referred all calls to the Foreign Ministry.

Visbal enjoys diplomatic immunity so any arrest warrant must come through Interpol. A Peruvian officer at the international police agency in Lima said he had no information on the case.

Visbal was named to the post by President Juan Manuel Santos in 2010.
