International Criminal Court judges say Kenya's deputy president can skip large parts of his trial on charges of orchestrating post-election violence so that he can carry out his government duties.

William Ruto is scheduled to go on trial starting Sept. 10 with broadcaster Josha Arap Sang. Judges, who made the decision on Ruto on Tuesday, had already ruled the case could begin in Kenya or Tanzania.

Ruto and Sang are charged with the alleged murder, forcible deportation and persecution of supporters of political opponents in the aftermath of Kenya's disputed 2007 presidential election. They insist they are innocent.

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, who faces a separate trial on similar charges, has not applied to be excused attending parts of his trial but has asked to follow parts by video link.
