India's defense minister A.K. Antony has confirmed people died when a navy submarine caught fire and sank at its home port in Mumbai. He gave no details.

Eighteen sailors had been trapped on the diesel-powered submarine after an explosion caused a fire early Wednesday morning.

The fire was extinguished in about two hours.

Antony said he felt sad about the loss of lives in the accident.
