CLEVELAND, Miss. (AP) — The latest on a shooting at Delta State University that left a professor dead (all times local):

12:40 a.m.

Police say that the suspect in two shooting deaths in Mississippi was returning from Arkansas when a license plate reader picked up his plate as he crossed a bridge over the Mississippi River.

Cleveland Police Chief Charles "Buster" Bingham said Monday that Greenville police followed Shannon Lamb but did not try to apprehend him.

Then Lamb pulled over and took off on foot. Bingham said the police were waiting for backup when they heard a gunshot. When backup arrived, they searched and found Lamb with a gunshot wound to the head.

Lamb is suspected in the shooting deaths of two people in Mississippi including a woman he was living with and a teacher at Delta State University in Cleveland. The shooting sent the entire campus into lockdown, which was lifted late Monday.

11:30 p.m.

Authorities say the suspect in the fatal shooting of his domestic partner and a university professor in Mississippi is dead.

Delta State University police chief Lynn Buford told The Associated Press late Monday that Greenville police were following 45-year-old Shannon Lamb when Lamb pulled over, jumped out of his car, and ran.

Buford says police heard one gunshot and found Lamb with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. They took Lamb to the hospital in Greenville where Buford says he was pronounced dead.

Police say Lamb fatally shot the woman he lived with on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and also fatally shot 39-year-old history professor Ethan Schmidt on the Delta State University campus in Cleveland, Mississippi, on Monday. The woman was identified as 41-year-old Amy Prentiss.

The former husband of a woman shot and killed in southern Mississippi says she was a "good person" and that their daughter is devastated by her death.

Shawn O'Steen said Monday that he was married to Amy Prentiss for about seven years.

Authorities are looking for Shannon Lamb, who is suspected in connection with Prentiss' death as well as the death of a teacher at a Mississippi university on Monday.

O'Steen said he and Prentiss divorced 15 years ago, but remained friends.

He said the two have a daughter who is 19.

He said his daughter was "devastated" and that she and her mother were "absolutely best friends."

8:48 p.m.

A Delta State University professor says campus police did a good job of quickly notifying faculty, staff and students about an on-campus shooting.

English professor Bill Hayes says he respects police but was frustrated about the amount of information he received after the initial alert as officers sought a suspected gunman.

Delta State University President Bill LaForge says within 10 minutes of a shooting being reported to campus police, the university sent a campuswide alert. He says it was sent Monday morning to students, staff and faculty members by text message and messages on Twitter and Facebook. The campus was locked down much of the day.

Police were searching off-campus late Monday for Shannon Lamb, a suspect in the campus shooting and an earlier shooting death on the Gulf Coast.

Police in southern Mississippi say they have spoken with a man suspected in two shooting deaths and that he said he's "not going to jail."

Lt. Scott Wilson and another officer whose name was not given said during a news conference Monday in Gautier that they have spoken with Shannon Lamb.

They urged extreme caution in dealing with him. The unidentified officer said Lamb told police "he's not going to jail." They would not say when or how they spoke to Lamb. The news conference was broadcast on WLOX.

Police have identified Lamb as a suspect in the shooting deaths of a woman he was living with in Gautier and a teacher he worked with at Delta State University in Cleveland.

A manhunt is now under way for Lamb.

Mississippi police say a man sought in the fatal shooting of a university professor is also a suspect in the shooting death of a woman he lived with 300 miles away.

Investigators in Gautier (GO-shay) say 41-year-old Amy Prentiss was found shot to death in a home there Monday and that 45-year-old Shannon Lamb is a suspect.

Lamb is also a suspect in the shooting death of history professor Ethan Schmidt on the Delta State University campus in Cleveland, Mississippi, on Monday.

Cleveland is about 300 miles north of Gautier.

Police on the Mississippi Gulf Coast have identified a woman who they believe was killed by the same man suspected in a university campus shooting.

Police in Gautier (GO-shay) say 41-year-old Amy Prentiss was found shot to death in a home there Monday. The suspect in that shooting is 45-year-old Shannon Lamb.

Lamb is also a suspect in the shooting death of history professor Ethan Schmidt on the Delta State University campus in Cleveland, Mississippi, on Monday. Cleveland is about 300 miles north of Gautier.

Lamb is still at large.

Investigators say they do not yet know a motive in the slaying of a professor at a campus in Mississippi and are still searching for the suspect.

Cleveland Police Chief Charles "Buster" Bingham says Shannon Lamb, who had been called a person of interest earlier Monday, is now considered a suspect in the fatal shooting of Ethan Schmidt. Schmidt was a history professor at Delta State University.

Bingham says Lamb is considered armed and dangerous. He also has been linked to a slaying in Gautier in south Mississippi, though authorities have not provided many details about that slaying.

Authorities say they are searching for a car believed to be driven by a person of interest in the slaying of a university professor in Mississippi.

Mississippi Highway Patrol spokesman Johnny Poulos says investigators believe Shannon Lamb is driving a 2011 black Dodge Avenger with a Mississippi license plate and the number STF 015. The license plate also has the word "Stone" as a designation for Stone County.

He says people with information about the location of that car can call the Cleveland, Mississippi, Police Department at 662-843-3611.

Lamb has been called a "person of interest" in the shooting of history professor Ethan Schmidt at Delta State University on Monday morning. Police also say they have information suggesting he may have been involved in another slaying in south Mississippi.

Murray Roark, deputy coroner in Bolivar County, says Schmidt was killed in his office Monday at Delta State University.

The suspect in the shooting has not yet been identified and remains at large. However, Warren Strain, a spokesman for the Mississippi Department of Public Safety, says the suspect is no longer believed to be on the campus.

He would not say how investigators reached that conclusion or say where the suspect is believed to be.
