Rarity: Living Soldier Will Get Medal of Honor

Obama to honor soldier's bravery in Afghan firefight

(Newser) – A young Army specialist who ran through enemy fire in Afghanistan to rescue wounded soldiers will get the Medal of Honor for his bravery, reports the Washington Post. Salvatore Giunta, now a 25-year-old sergeant, will be the first living recipient since the Vietnam War. The US has awarded six medals posthumously from the Iraq and Afghan wars, a relative paucity that critics say has contributed to a general lack of appreciation for those conflicts.

Giunta declined interviews, but he played down his actions in a 2007 interview for Sebastian Junger's book War. "Everything slowed down and I did everything I thought I could do, nothing more and nothing less," he said. "I didn't run through fire to save a buddy. I ran through fire to see what was going on with him and maybe we could hide behind the same rock and shoot together. I didn't run through fire to do anything heroic or brave. I did what I believe anyone would have done."

What a great American. Volunteered to join the military; asked to go to terrible places, regardless of whether you think we should be there or not (though if a whole nation of women who can't even leave their homes...nevermind, I'm getting off topic); fights for his life and the lives of his buddies; risks his neck under fire... Does anybody even know what that feels like? What a great American. Thank you, Salvatore, for your heart, honor, and duty. I hope more people back home learn from you.

I'm sorry, America (and that really MEANS truly sorry) but there is NO "honor" in these wars. None whatsoever. It's sad that even this award - something that under normal circumstance might have been OK - now SUCKS. And will get no sympathy - no, will get actual hostility - from 90% of the civilised world. Nowhere in the world will Sgt Giunta be able to wear this with pride. Not even everywhere in America. You can't start illegal, unnecesary wars and then dish out "honors".
