(Newser) – Bill Gates is still the richest man in America but Mark Zuckerburg is moving up in the rankings, according to the latest Forbes rich list. The 26-year-old Facebook founder, with an estimated fortune of $6.9 billion, is now in 35th place, surging ahead of Apple's Steve Jobs, who came in 42nd with an estimated net worth of $6.1 billion, most of it coming from his stake in Disney.

Zuckerberg's net worth soared by $4.9 billion last year thanks to private equity deals that valued Facebook at $23 billion. He's the second-youngest billionaire on the list. The youngest is Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz, who was born 8 days after Zuckerberg. He comes in at number 290 with a fortune of $1.4 billion. Zuckerberg already appears to be moving to give some of his fortune away, and is announcing a $100 million donation to Newark's public schools. Click here for that story.

Zuck got his money the old fashioned way... he invented a product that people want to use. I don't begrudge him making money off Facebook, as he isn't stealing it from anyone else. But he's still a geeky unappealing schmuck with no social skills and few real friends. I think there's some irony in that.

So, you guys are not impressed by the 100 million donation he's just made to an extremely struggling school district?
