Study puts us way behind Australians and the Swiss

(User Submitted) – A new study in Medicine and Science in Sports & Exercise confirms what many already knew: Americans don't walk much. In fact, Americans walk an average of only 5,117 steps per day. That compares unfavorably to Australians (9,695), the Swiss (9,650), and the Japanese (7,168). One mile is about 2,000 steps, and Americans need to average about 30-40 more minutes of daily walking to close the gap. “Five thousand steps is really pretty inactive," says the lead author. It's hard to take a study seriously when they studied 1,136 people. A thousand people out of 400 million is hardly going to give even a remote actual average.

Countries like Japan and Switzerland actually have this little thing called "public transportation". Americans prefer sitting on their fat asses in traffic in their gas-guzzling SUV's and Hummers. It's time to get with the 21st Century America.
