Man convicted of robbery sentenced to amputation

(Newser) – An Iranian man convicted of robbing a candy store will have his hand cut off as punishment, reports the BBC, citing local media. Police found $900, gloves, and what the BBC describes as “a large amount of chocolate” in his car before arresting him. Typically, amputations are used as punishment for habitual thieves. This man was also sentenced to a year in prison.

Even the more holy and authoritarian among us at least have to wonder whether amputating a man’s means of performing labor, can do anything but continue the rather vicious cycle.
