(Newser) – Boxing's first female superstar is recovering in the hospital after being attacked with a knife and handgun by her husband, police say. Christy Martin managed to escape from the couple's Orlando-area home and flag down a motorist who took her to hospital, the Orlando Sentinel reports. Police are searching for her husband, 66-year-old Jim Martin, who had been her trainer and publicist for years.

Martin became a star after a 1996 bout in Las Vegas that was televised to 30 million homes. Promoter Don King, who signed Martin in the early '90s, called her a "fantastic fighter" and "symbol of womanhood" and said they had been in touch about a possible comeback. "I'm very saddened by this tragic incident," he said. "My prayers go out for her."

Well that fits in nicely with the international day for the elimination of violence against women.

Oh, those heterosexuals! One more of countless superior straight marriages that would be disgraced by gays marrying.
