(Newser) – Mark Madoff's widow has appealed to the public to have some compassion in the wake of her husband's suicide. "Regardless of what you feel about my father-in-law and his monstrous crimes, Mark's children are innocent victims and this is tragic for them," said Stephanie Morgan in her first comments since her husband hanged himself with a dog leash in their Manhattan home. "I am devastated and now raising two small children alone. I ask that you please show decency and understanding toward Mark’s children and allow us to mourn in private. I will miss him and love him forever."

Mark and his younger brother, Andrew, have been the target of investigators seeking money swindled from investors in Bernard Madoff's Ponzi scheme. The brothers each received some $60 million from their parents and from family enterprises that belongs to scammed investors, bankruptcy trustee Irving Picard has charged. Both sons broke off contact with their dad after they turned him in 2 years ago.
