(Newser) – The vice president has made a surprise visit to Afghanistan. Joe Biden is in the country to review progress as allied forces turn security over to Afghan hands, the AP reports. He’s set to meet with President Karzai and US commander David Petraeus, the White House says; he’ll also greet troops and civilian personnel and visit an Afghan Army training center. He's due to visit Islamabad later this week to announce more US aid for Pakistan.

Sadly, those in the military can be forced to listen to Biden.

Oddly enough, Biden's is the closest thing to an adult voice in this administration when it comes to Afghanistan. From the beginning of Obama's term, he has lobbied for reducing troop levels and abandoning the disastrous "nation-building" exercise. If Obama had listened to him, we would be winding up the live action war in favor of drone warfare and clandestine operations. (Those options are pretty bad, too, but they are much better than what we are doing now.)
