French president wooing 'heart of America'

(Newser) – French President Nicolas Sarkozy yesterday demonstrated why he is dubbed “Sarko l’Américain,” bursting onto the Washington scene hugging and backslapping, reports the New York Times. He clearly enjoyed his first official visit to the US despite lingering pain over his pending divorce from wayward wife, Cécilia.

“I come to bear a very simple message on behalf of all Frenchmen,” he said at a formal White House dinner. “I want to reconquer the heart of America.” Earlier he told the French American Business Council: “I never quite understood why we had to fight with the United States. I never quite got it.”

(AP) - France and Afghanistan agree NATO should speed up by a year its timetable for handing all combat operations to Afghan forces in 2013, President Nicolas Sarkozy said today, raising new questions about the unity of the Western military alliance. Sarkozy also announced that all French combat troops will leave the country by the end of 2013, marking a distinct break from previous plans to adhere to the US goal of withdrawing combat forces by the end of 2014. As Summit Looms, ECB Slashes Rate Again

Meanwhile, Merkel and Sarkozy try to drum up support for plan

(NEWSER) - The European Central Bank slashed rates for the second time in as many months today, ahead of a crucial EU summit that could determine the fate of the euro. Analysts had expected the cut, which brings the key rate from 1.25% down to 1%, but sources tell Bloomberg that the ECB may do even more to kick-start bank lending, like lowering collateral standards.
