A 1994 mug shot of Enrico Ponzo.   (FBI)

(Newser) – Stunned residents of the small Idaho town of Marsing have just learned that the man they knew as Jay Shaw was actually Enrico Ponzo, a fugitive mobster from Boston. Ponzo, who had been on the lam for 17 years, was arrested this week for a long list of charges including racketeering and conspiracy to murder. The FBI says the 42-year-old gangster was part of a rogue Mafia faction that attempted to kill New England mob boss "Cadillac" Frank Salemme.

"You know, I’ve always thought there was something a little bit different about Jay. I’ve always felt he was running or hiding from something,” said a neighbor who describes Ponzo as "a very, very, nice guy" who lived an unremarkable life. “I’m in shock," he told the Idaho Statesman. Ponzo, the neighbor says, called him from jail to ask him to look after his cows. "I said, ‘Hey, what’s going on,’" the neighbor says. "He laughs: ‘This is a bunch of bull, but I’m going to be here a long time.’"

I suspect he lived in Ft. Wayne Indiana for a time, claiming the alia; Seymour Butts! Some say he helped build the new Memorial Building-to be named for the town's longest running mayor, Harry Baals (see Newser article). Small World.

A plot reminiscent of that Viggo Mortensen movie, A History of Violence.

omg! I almost fainted when I read this! I lived in Marsing for close to 2 years! being from California, Marsing, and the rest of Idaho was like culture shock! & people would see our CA plates when we 1st arrived and yell out at us to "go home"...friendly? not so much..the chick in the Marsing DMV (also the hardware store and coroners office!) told me, when I missed a question about driving in snow...said "oh most foreigners fail that portion".!!!!!!!!!!!!! foreigners! I was never more bored in my entire life, but I tell myself, if I ever get diagnosed with six months to live "ill go back to marsing, cause every day is a freakin eternity!"...maybe this guy sorta wanted to get caught....
