The format war between HD DVD and Blu-ray has apparently gotten personal. News.com reports that the AVS Forum—normally a place for top notch audio/visual discussion—has shut down its HD DVD and Blu-ray forums until the end of the week due to intolerable flame wars between fans of the formats, with some escalating to near-physical levels.

“We have seen members attacking other members not only in debate, which is the right way, but with physical threats that have involved police and possible legal action,” reads the note on AVS’ downed hi-def forums. The formats have been vying for consumers' wallets for more than a year and half now, without no clear signs of a favorite yet. (More Blu ray stories.)
