Police Defeat Fans, 11-0
Italian police clash with Manchester United fans during their Champion   (Associated Press)

In Rome, a squad of determined Italian riot police prevailed over 11 Manchester United fans, sending them to the hospital. Over 5,000 Man U supporters crowded the stands at Rome's Stadio Olimpico; their team fell to Roma, 2-1, as they themselves lost by a greater margin to the disciplined onslaught of club- and shield-wielding police.

Manchester United described the scene as "disturbing," and investigations of police brutality may be underway, e.g., in the case of Stephen Fitzsimons, who said he "was knifed in the groin as he made his way to the ground."  Residents of Rome suggested that some of the English fans may have been drunk.
