The Boston Celtics were explosive out of the gate this season and kept up that pace in last night's 112-101 defeat of the New Jersey Nets, the Boston Herald reports. The big three came through as usual, with Paul Pierce sinking 28 points, Ray Allen putting up 27 and Kevin Garnett adding 14 boards to his 18 points. Elsewhere in the NBA:

  • Portland held Dirk Nowitzki to just 11 points and nine rebounds as the Mavericks fell, 91-82.
  • Sixth man Leandro Barbosa had a career-high 39 points starting for Phoenix in a 106-96 win over Orlando.
  • Toronto smashed Chicago, 101-71, holding Ben Wallace scoreless and allowing only 22 points from the Bulls' starting five.
