Search for Shannan Gilbert takes to the sea

(Newser) – The serial killer that Long Island cops suspect is using a lonely stretch near Jones Beach as a dumping ground may not be the first to have done so: The latest remains pulled from the area are too old to be connected with those of four prostitutes found in December. "These are so old that roots were growing around the vertebrae and the skull," a source tells the New York Post. "These could be one or two of Joel Rifkin's victims who were never found," or those of another killer.

Rifkin confessed in 1993 to murdering 17 NYC prostitutes and disposing of their bodies all over New York state; three bodies were never found. The age of the remains means that 24-year-old Shannan Gilbert, a New Jersey prostitute, remains unaccounted for. The search for her and other bodies continued today, but took to the sea: As Newsday reports, divers are combing an area known as Hemlock Cove, between Oak and Gilgo beaches. (NEWSER) - The dense brush of an isolated Long Island beach yielded three more sets of human remains today, making a total of eight recovered in the vicinity, and giving credence to investigators' suspicions that they're dealing with a serial killer. Police have not identified the remains, nor those of another body found last week, but are searching for a New Jersey prostitute who went missing in the area in May 2010. Child Among Remains Pulled From LI Beach

Search resumes today

(NEWSER) - One of the four bodies that cops found on a desolate Long Island beach last week is that of an infant or child, reports the New York Post. "One doesn't match the others. It's a young person, possibly as young as an infant, or a child," says a source. "If that's the case, then that wouldn't fit the pattern." The other three haven't been identified, but four other sets of remains found several miles away have all been confirmed as prostitutes who advertised on Craigslist. More»

New Bones Found on 'Serial Killer' Beach

Cop spots remains from Long Island highway

(NEWSER) - A police officer has found a fifth set of bones that may be linked to a serial killer on a lonely Long Island beach. The Suffolk County cop spotted the remains as he drove along a highway past Gilgo Beach in Copiague. Four murdered prostitutes have been found in burlap bags in the area. They were discovered late last year as police hunted for another missing prostitute who ran off after begging a local resident for help.
