(Newser) – Police in Florida are questioning a father who says his 2-year-old son accidentally shot and killed his mother. Troy Bailey Jr. says he left the handgun unattended on a table while visiting the victim, ABC News reports. "My son picked it up, and I tried to grab it," he said in a 911 call. "Jesus Christ, God, why do I put myself in this spot?"

Police are trying to determine whether the toddler would have been able to pick up the 3-pound Glock by himself and pull the trigger. "This is not a clear-cut case," said a police spokeswoman. "There is a still a lot of work we need to do to determine if this was an accident or not." Even if investigators conclude that the death was an accident, Bailey is likely to face negligence charges. The toddler is now in the custody of a maternal aunt and keeps asking for his mother.

Last time I checked, forensics had gunpowder residue test on hands pretty solidly down. Police in Florida should probably use the resources available to them next time...
