Sony Gets Hacked Again

Breach of Sony Online Entertainment affects 24M users

(Newser) – Sony’s got another security breach on its hands. This time, hackers may have made off with the information of about 24 million users of Sony Online Entertainment products, which include games like Everquest and DC Universe Online. Sony doesn’t think credit card information was stolen, but hackers also breached an “outdated” database from 2007 that included the credit and debit card numbers of more than 24,000 overseas customers, Politico reports.

Sony says it “promptly shut down all servers related to SOE” when its investigators discovered the breach. The news comes hot on the heels of Sony’s refusal to testify before the House Energy and Commerce Committee about its Playstation Network fiasco. The company says it will provide written answers to questions instead. “Millions of American consumers are twisting in the wind,” a spokesman for one committee member tells the Wall Street Journal. “We are determined to get answers for them.”

*What* server operating systems is Sony using that are being hacked so easily? I remember when the PS3 first came out, they did everything they could to keep Linux off of it. Just curious if anyone knows any details about these failures, why it seems someone is making such an easy time of getting around their security. Seems kind of strange to me is all.

(NEWSER) - A hacker who got into the PlayStation Network may have gotten players' credit card information—including expiration dates and security codes, reports USA Today . "We cannot rule out the possibility," says a Sony executive on a company blog . The hacker, or hackers, did get personal information such as names, addresses, email addresses, passwords, and log-in names, notes the AP . (NEWSER) - First the hackers came for Sony’s PlayStation Network , and now they’ve breached Nintendo. The Japanese company announced today that one of its US website servers was hacked, but no company or customer information was compromised and nothing was damaged. Though the incident is minor compared to the PlayStation hacking and other recent attacks, it does raise questions about whether online services can ever be truly protected from hackers, the Wall Street Journal notes. (NEWSER) - Sony’s CEO has finally broken his silence on the PlayStation network break-ins—but his comments come just as hackers, angry at Sony’s handling of the situation, announced plans to attack the company this weekend, in what would be the third such attack against Sony. These hackers say they have access to Sony servers, and aim to reveal “some or all” of the information they can copy from them, reports CNET .
