Foreign minister thinks Libya leader probably got injured by airstrike

(Newser) – Today's hot rumor from Libya: Moammar Gadhafi is wounded and has fled Tripoli for a safer part of Libya, reports Reuters. It's not some anonymous tweet, though: It comes from Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini, who himself got it from the Catholic bishop in the Libyan capital. "I tend to give credence to the comment of the bishop of Tripoli, Monsignor (Innocenzo) Martinelli," says Frattini. A Gadhafi spokesman dismissed it as "nonsense."

Martinelli has had close contact with the Gadhafi regime and would presumably be in a position to know—he and a Muslim cleric blessed the bodies of Gadhafi's son and grandchildren killed in a recent airstrike. Martinelli could not be reached; his office says the bishop has left Tripoli for Tunis. As for the images that surfaced yesterday purporting to show the Libyan leader in the capital: "I strongly doubted that those images were taken on that day and above all in Tripoli," says Frattini.

(NEWSER) - As the Libya endgame continues, news is breaking quickly: A rebel leader tells the AP Seif al-Islam Gadhafi has been arrested, and Reuters reports that Moammar Gadhafi's government is ready to negotiate with rebels. Earlier reports on Twitter stated that both of Gadhafi's sons had been captured (his eldest reportedly surrendered ); that Gadhafi's security and presidential guard have surrendered; and that hundreds of people are out on the streets of Tripoli celebrating . The Washington Post reports that Gadhafi's compound is basically surrounded and the rebel flag flies from many buildings. (NEWSER) - The International Criminal Court has accused Moammar Gadhafi of crimes against humanity and has issued arrest warrants for him and two of his top aides. The ICC presiding judge says there are "reasonable grounds to believe" that Gadhafi and son Saif al-Islam are "criminally responsible as indirect co-perpetrators" for persecuting and killing Libyan civilians. A warrant was also issued for intelligence chief Abdullah al-Sanussi, the BBC reports. The chief ICC prosecutor requested the warrants in May. More»

(NEWSER) - Countries that stepped into the Libyan conflict are promising $1 billion in support for the rebel cause. The pledge from nations including Italy, France, Turkey, and Australia is backed in large part by Libyan assets, notes the New York Times , but some legal considerations still stand between the money and the rebels.
