It seemed like USC's costly  losses had knocked them out of Rose Bowl contention earlier this fall, but a season of top-team upsets, coupled with the Trojans' blowout defeat of No. 6 Arizona State last night, have put Pasadena back on the table. "We didn't play good; they did," ASU coach Dennis Erickson admitted to the Arizona Republic.

If Erickson was referring to his team's pass protection, he was understating it a bit. ASU's linemen, already second worst in the nation for sacks allowed, watched the Trojans take down Rudy Carpenter six times, once sending him to the sidelines with a cut lip. Carpenter's counterpart, John David Booty, threw for four touchdowns on 375 yards. (More NCAA football stories.)
