Crazy, Stupid, Love Actually Quite Smart

Steve Carell, Julianne Moore star in winning romantic comedy

(Newser) – Critics largely enjoyed Crazy, Stupid, Love—and some have fallen head over heels for the romantic comedy with an all-star cast.

In the Los Angeles Times, Betsy Sharkey gushes that the film “may well restore your faith in the very possibility of love, to say nothing of romantic comedies.” The “grand romantic gesture about grand romantic gestures conjures up the bittersweet magic of first loves, lasting loves, lost loves and all the loves in between.”
"It’s the mild exception that makes, if not for a great movie, then at least for a pleasant surprise," writes Rick Groen in the Globe and Mail.

“In a time before raunchy, R-rated laffers competed for the how-low-can-you-go prize, the demand for mature, grown-up romantic comedies resulted in pics as wise and wonderfully character-driven as Crazy, Stupid, Love,” observes Variety.
In the New Yorker, David Denby has his reservations. “The script has many parts in motion, and a fair amount of it works delicately and well,” he notes. But the film “holds to the boring modern convention that good people are inarticulate.”

(NEWSER) - Some critics are raving over Blue Valentine, a harrowing tale in which Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams play a couple ripping apart at the seams. But not everyone is impressed with the film (whose infamous oral sex scene has gotten plenty of press).

“This wrenching story of a marriage that rides a roller coaster for six tumultuous years is not to be missed,” writes Peter Travers in Rolling Stone . “Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams give two of the most explosive and emotionally naked performances you will see anywhere.”
"This is the kind of movie about marriage Americans don't usually make," writes Dana Stevens for Slate . "Although the violence is almost entirely emotional, you walk out as devastated as if you'd seen a war picture."

Despicable Me Good, But It's No Toy Story 3

Animated feature is strong, if generic, hyper: critics

(NEWSER) - Critics agree that French studio Illumination Entertainment has made a strong first entry into feature animation with Despicable Me, featuring Steve Carrell voicing a cartoon baddy who adopts three little girls. But it has the misfortune to premiere within weeks of Pixar's beloved Toy Story 3.

Despicable Me "cannot be faulted for lack of trying," AO Scott writes in the New York Times . "If anything, it tries much too hard, stuffing great gobs of second-rate action, secondhand humor and warmed-over sentiment into every nook and cranny of its relentlessly busy 3-D frames. It tries so hard to be likable that you may hate yourself for hating it."

Letters to Juliet Best Left Unsent

Sappy, predictable rom-com a guilty-pleasure only

(NEWSER) - Critics aren't exactly head-over-heels for Letters to Juliet, a predictable romantic comedy about a young woman helping an older one reconnect with a lost love, but it has its charms. Here's what they're saying:

“Letters will hardly go down as the funniest or sharpest caper of the year,” writes Mary Elizabeth Williams of Salon , but it's a “breathtakingly refreshing change” from the “flinty females and douche-bag dudes” that populate most recent rom-coms.

It's Complicated Really a Simple Rom-Com

It may not be complicated, but Alec Baldwin's performance shines

(NEWSER) - Some critics see Nancy Meyers' latest as somewhat more reasoned and subtle than her usual fare. But It's Complicated is still a formulaic flick—with a scene-stealing turn by Alec Baldwin. A few takes:

The flick " isn't nearly complicated enough, but at least Meyers has dropped something a bit more subtle than her usual anvil," writes Stephanie Zacharek for Salon . "This one is more like a mere tire iron, but at least we've got Baldwin: He's the pixie dust that chases away the ensuing headache."
