Plaxico, Jets Agree to One-Year Deal

Troubled receiver hasn't played since 2008

(Newser) – Another big NFL deal: Plaxico Burress, who served nearly two years in prison for possessing (and shooting himself with) an unlicensed gun, has agreed to a one-year deal with the Jets, the team announced today. Burress used to play on New York's other team—the Giants, with whom he won a Super Bowl in 2007—and it looked as if he might be headed back there until the Jets suddenly expressed interest yesterday, the New York Post reports.

"East Coast here I come!" tweeted Burress; Jets QB Mark Sanchez replied welcoming him to the squad. According to ESPN, the deal is for $3.017 million; that seemingly random extra $17,000 acknowledges the number, 17, he used to wear with the Giants, notes the Post. The receiver, who turns 34 next month, has not played since 2008 when his accidental shooting occurred.

Seems like a lot of money for a 34 year old that hasn't played in three years.
