(Newser) – Jani Lane, frontman of '80s hair-metal kings Warrant, has been found dead in a Los Angeles-area hotel. No cause of death has been established for the 47-year-old singer, who had a history of problems with alcohol, TMZ reports. Lane, who left the band in 2004 and returned for a tour in 2008, was the main songwriter for the band's six studio albums, including the double-platinum Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich and Cherry Pie.

This is embarrassing... never heard of the band; and I'm in rock music. Thought I was up on at least the popular groups; apparently not.

I ran into him one time at a Rite-Aid Pharmacy. I was buying toothpaste and he was buying mascara and hairspray. Two old ladies happened to be blocking the isle with the hair spray and jani smacked them out of the way with a sack of lip stick samples. One of them fractured a hip and the other one lost an eye and also her faith in humanity. Angels wept. Now with his passing, the Mebaline company and Smirnoff Vodka is weeping over lost profits...

Meet him once. Warrant played a concert at Six Flags in the early 90's and I was a manager for the department that provided the performers food. - he was nice, really wild and fun (to a teenage me). The execs did not like him or the rest of the band much. Not exactly the family friendly image that Six Flags wanted. They had a hard time wrangling him in the park and keeping him from causing problems. It was like baby sitting the worst smart ass kid who knew way too much for his age and who had no fear of discipline. Man that was one of the best concerts that Six Flags ever had because it was actually someone who was popular in the same decade as the concert. Besides the backstage stuff that was kept out of sight, he really didn't do anything that outrageous for a rock star and he was super nice to the employees, well the ones with boobs and not jail bait. 47 is just way to young. RIP
