BlackBerry's Best Can't Beat Apple, Google

The Bold 9900: 'Does Anybody Care'?

(Newser) – There’s a new BlackBerry on the market, but the “the question is: Does anybody care?” Apple and Google dominate the market, and things are “not looking good” for Research in Motion, which just laid off 2,000 people, writes David Pogue in the New York Times. That aside, how’s the new Bold 9900? “Gorgeous,” and the thinnest BlackBerry yet, with a “comfortable” keyboard and a “beautiful, responsive touch screen.” It’s a great phone—yet it’s not enough to compete with iPhone or Android.

Sure, the 9900 boasts “faster web browsing,” a 5-megapixel camera with HD video support, and a handy “scrolling strip of app icons.” But at $350, T-Mobile’s version costs more than the most expensive iPhone. It lacks a front-facing camera and its app store is “sparse.” With HP having yanked its offerings and Google’s purchase of Motorola, “the number of players in the smartphone game shrank suddenly, and it’s a shame,” Pogue notes. “Innovation is good; competition is better. A world with nothing but Apple and Google phones would be a less exciting place.”

The new Blackberry Bold will be available in the 9300 and a 9900 models.

This phone is the best BlackBerry RIM has ever produced, but against the gigantic technological and marketing forces of iPhone and Android, it’s a whisper in the wind. - David Pogue

A lack of a front facing camera and apps...sigh. I still haven't seen much of a use for a front facing camera. Self pics for posting on social media sites? Showing your caller what you look like at that exact moment? I think I'll be just fine without one. As for apps... RIM is in the waning period of a 2yr transition. Developers aren't too concerned about making apps for OS7 knowing that the next gen (QNX) will be coming in less than 6 mos. Not to mention, when it does arrive, Android apps will run just fine on it.  Yes, I use a BB.  I have a PlayBook too. I also develop themes and apps for both. Opinion pieces like this seem to only help convince the author that he made the right decision in his own phone purchase. Unlike most fanboys, I won't say any of the big 3 are better than the others. I just see them each serving their own purpose.

There are two things that will cripple Apple if the knowledge ever spreads further than Tech Circles One is that Apple products will not run Flash and that is an important issue with interactive web sites, even a site such as eBay relies on Flash Apple has a long running battle with Adobe and Jobs refused to sign a deal with Adobe and to allow the handhelds to run Flash The other is Apple is doing its best to not support the country that gave birth to it The price or cost per unit for lets say the iPad is less than 20 dollars per unit and sells for over 800 dollars per unit and this is achieved by using China as the place to build to get cheap labor. Apple also plans to pull production to another country in Asia if Chinas prices become to high, also implementation of robots on the production line to also reduce labor costs Uninformed people will continue to purchase Apple, if you need a good product go with Google

RIM is done for, just like Palm (remember when the Palm Pre was going to "crush" the iPhone, HAHAHA) It's a Google and Apple game now. One that won't die any time soon. Apple has a strong hold thanks to their vast line of products. Google is positioning themselves nicely with their purchase of Motorola
