California Atheist Group to Rip 'Immoral' Bible Pages

An outspoken California atheist group is taking a page out of Terry Jones’ book, and more than one page out of the Good Book. Backyard Skeptics will hold a demonstration on Huntington Beach tomorrow in which they rip pages out of the bible that they say depict immoral teachings, the Orange County Register reports. “There are plenty verses in the Bible that if you did any of those things today, you’d be thrown in jail immediately,” group director Bruce Gleason explains.

As an example, he cites Deuteronomy 22: 14-31, which says that a man may have his wife stoned if he discovers she’s not a virgin, and a later verse in the chapter suggesting that virgins who are raped should be forced to marry their rapists. But Gleason insists the event will remain respectful, and says he doesn’t expect any conflict. “We’re not there to burn the Bible or desecrate,” he says. (More Backyard Skeptics stories.)
