(Newser) – Moammar Gadhafi's son apparently never made it out of Libya. Saif al-Islam Gadhafi, who was once being groomed to take over for his father, has been captured in the southern part of the country, reports AP. He was apparently trying to flee to Niger when he and two aides were caught near the border. An image on Libyan television shows Saif in custody with three bandaged fingers. He was the last wanted member of the Gadhafi family still at large.

"This is the day of victory, this is the day of liberation, finally the son of the tyrant has been captured," said one Libyan who joined celebrations in Tripoli. "Now we are free, now we are free, God is Great." Saif (also spelled Seif) is wanted on war crimes charges by the International Criminal Court. He once had a decent reputation in the West as a potential reformer, but he shed that trying to quell the uprising that toppled his father. Click for more on that.
