(Newser) Bad reviews? Ha! The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn—Part 1 sunk its teeth into the weekend box office, raking in $139.5 million and notching the fifth-best domestic opening ever, the Los Angeles Times reports. (Its only financial failing: missing the $142.8 million opening record set by the series' second installment, New Moon.) The only other major release this weekend, Happy Feet Two, trudged along in second place with a mere $22 million.

Filling out the top five movies that lacked pale vampires and bare-chested werewolves:

  • Immortals, $12.3 million; down 62% in its second weekend.
  • Jack and Jill, $12 million; also in its second weekend, down 52%.
  • Puss in Boots, $10.7 million in its fourth weekend.

A plea to the forty-ish housewives of America...please, cut it out.  No one wants to see this tripe anymore.

These kind of movies appeal to young audience and they dictate most of what is offered at the theatres.  That's why HOBO & Showtime offer excellent writing and imaginative directing.  Most of the good writers are welcome to cable & my subscription is worth every penny.  Check out Boardwalk Empire, Dexter, Temple Grandin, Rome & Game of Thrones and you'll see why.  Having said all of the above, there have been a few shining examples of great cinema - Up in the Air, Michael Clayton, The Lovely Bones, Skyline, King Kong, The Mist, The Collector, The Forgotten, March of the Penguins, etc.
