Here's Why Movie Revenue Is Down

High prices and few choices don't help: Roger Ebert

(Newser) – News that movie theaters had lackluster revenue in 2011 didn’t surprise Roger Ebert. He ticks off a list of the reasons why at his blog, including the lack of an Avatar-like blockbuster and usual suspects like too-high prices for tickets and refreshments. But also:

  • Distractions: Loud talkers and people using their cell phones (with their bright screens) to text are getting out of hand.

  • Few choices: It’s a myth that Americans don’t like “art movies,” but most people outside big cities get to see only the same, lame big-budget movies.
“The message I get is that Americans love the movies as much as ever,” writes Ebert. “It's the theaters that are losing their charm." Smart ones that cater to movie lovers thrive. "The rest of the industry can't depend forever on blockbusters to bail it out.” Click for the full column.

Fewer people are heading out to movie theaters these days, it seems.

Too Much CompetitionLike brick & mortar retail stores suffer from on-line competition,so do theatres. Unless early reviews of a movie indicate “don’tmiss it”, I do. I can wait for it on Netflix. On-line books for Kindle and others are also new theatre com-petition. When I have a need to be entertained, a new, down-loaded, best-seller offers nearly instant gratification for roughlythe same cost as a movie and popcorn. So, not just because of  the paucity of compelling new movies, group me with the tens of thousands of septuagenarians who are succumbing to the newer forms of entertainment competition. We don’t even need to burn $3.50/gallon gasoline to get it.johndavid

Ticket prices and movies that suck is why revenues are down.
