Romney's Super PAC Is Destroying Gingrich

And he can thank the Citizens United ruling

(Newser) – Newt Gingrich might well be the first big-name casualty of the Supreme Court's Citizens United ruling that rewrote the rules on campaign financing. The decision cleared the way for "super PACs" like the one backing Mitt Romney called Restore Our Future, which has poured $2.8 million so far into nonstop TV ads attacking Gingrich, reports the New York Times. Gingrich's standing in the polls has plunged since the spots started airing three weeks ago, and it's all perfectly legal because the group operates independently of the Romney campaign (even if it's run by former Romney aides).

These super PACs can take in unlimited donations, unlike the candidates' official campaigns, and the arms war is just beginning. “Iowa is ground zero of what we can expect in every competitive state for the rest of the presidential election,” says the executive director of a group that tracks such things. Obama backers already have formed a super PAC of their own, called Priorities USA Action.

I will never understand how I can only contribute X amount of dollars to a political thing as an individual and any group of two people is free to spend whatever.  PACs are criminal. Denounce them and give their donations away to the people.

Bad omen.  It shows Romney has the ability to get the facts out.  That's not exactly what Obama needs to have happen in the general.  There's been a 3 year pity-party and scape-goat-a-thon going on in the White House to hide the failures under the rug.  Without the U.S. treasury, and the endless unemployment extensions, there'd be soup-lines and bread-lines in every city and town in the United States.  Period.  Then the scale of what's taken place in this administration would become visible to every voter. All this is hidden under the rug, and more, and if Romney can lift up that rug and show it to people, the blame-fest and pity party are over.

"Back in 2000, George W. Bush made a discovery of enormous consequence: You could base a whole political campaign on claims that were flatly untrue, like the claim that your big tax cuts for the wealthy went to the middle class, or the claim that diverting Social Security funds into private accounts would strengthen the system’s finances, and reporters would never point this out. That’s when I formulated my doctrine that if Bush said the earth was flat, headlines would read: 'Views Differ on Shape of Planet.'”~Paul Krugman
