After Komen Cut, Donations to Planned Parenthood Rise

Backlash fierce as foundation cuts cancer screening funds

(Newser) – The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation's decision to cut off funding to Planned Parenthood has sparked a fierce backlash, with at least two petitions cropping up urging the cancer foundation to change its mind, and a slew of donations flooding into Planned Parenthood itself, the LA Times reports. Planned Parenthood Federation of America has launched a Breast Health Emergency Fund that it's hoping can make up for the lost Komen grants.

That fund has already gotten at least one $250,000 check from the Amy and Lee Fikes family foundation. "We encourage others to join us in replacing the funds lost, so that no woman's health is imperiled by Komen's unfortunate decision," it said. On the Komen foundation's message board, criticism of the move dwarfed support, though there was some of that, too. Anti-abortion groups have praised the move, trumpeting it as a result of public pressure. (A Cafe Mom columnist suggests five ways for opponents to protest the move here.)

As usual, Tap and Luciano have turned this into a debate about when human life starts.  By their logic,  (story now on newser) the three year old boy who had a fetus growing inside him, had an abortion.  It should have been illegal!!!! Because, humanity begins at conception.   Its all about the DNA.

We'll see if this is the free market and great news if Komen starts to lose donations that it lives on. Screw the rightwingnuts. Planned Parenthood provides legal medical services. Get it legal medical services. If you don't like it change the law. Oh you've tried and can't not even with Dubya and majorities in both the House and Senate. Tough nuggees.

This is a great story. The government is out of PP. They should never be in that business in the first place. Komen stopped supporting PP. They are right to do so when PP doesn't fit Komen's principles. After all Komen is a non-profit itself. Seems odd to me that one non-profit supports another in the first place. PP replaces the funding with private donations. Perfect solution! Freedom in action, finally.
